“You make known to me the path of life, you will fill me with joy in your presence…” Psalm 16:11

physical, spiritual, and emotional/cognitive balance

A friend and I were talking the other day about a transition she is experiencing.  Her role of primary caregiver for a family member has ended.  It’s a really big transition for her and it has kind of thrown her and disrupted her life.  All of a sudden, she has time to fill– yet she is not even sure where to begin.  It’s like her identity has been shifted from underneath her.  She is really struggling through this change.

We had a great conversation about some things she would like to make time for and how she envisions her life in the near future, as well as down the road.  As we brainstormed and talked, she made an interesting self-discovery that I thought was probably applicable to many people.

While thinking through things she used to have time for and things that were energy gainers for her, she realized that one of the activities she always did was something for her physical body, another was more of a spiritual activity, and the third was an activity that really helped with her emotions and thinking.

Hmmm, we were on to something there.

She told me that she realized that she felt the most energy and was the most balanced when she incorporated something for each aspect of her life.  When she didn’t, it felt like something was missing or not right.

We sat there and thought about that for a few seconds.  Then it hit her.  She knew exactly where she should begin.  Her whole outlook changed.  She was eager and excited to incorporate some things back into her life and did not feel so overwhelmed about the transition she is walking through.

So, that got me to thinking…….

Life balance isn’t just managing our time well.  It’s not just about cutting out the busyness in order to do the things we need to do and making sure that we enjoy our life as we live it…..   It also incorporates balance in each of these three aspects of our being.  Physical, spiritual and emotional/thinking.

What do you like to do for each of those areas?  Have you ever thought about it?  Do you feel more balanced when you are caring for each of those aspects of your being?  Have you ever stopped to pay attention to which things really give you energy in those areas and which things just drain your energy?

Is there an area that you are neglecting?  ….or maybe even an area that is ok, but could be improved?  What can you do to change that?   What will you commit to doing?

I challenge you to be intentional this week about finding balance in your life– physically, spiritually and emotionally.
