“You make known to me the path of life, you will fill me with joy in your presence…” Psalm 16:11

Praying for your spouse

One of my favorite authors is Elizabeth George.  I think I have most of her books, if not all of them.  I’m reading through 3 of them again right now and working through the growth and study guides that go with them.

One of the books I’m reading is A Wife After God’s Own Heart.  As I’ve been working my way through it, I’ve tried to really stop and reflect on what kind of wife I am and what kind of wife God would like me to be for John.  I’m sure there’s plenty of room for improvement.  As we celebrated our 22nd anniversary this past weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship and what I could do to grow as a wife in order to impact our marriage and family in a positive way .

In the very first chapter, she discussed little things that make a big difference in your life and marriage.  One of them really challenged me:  Praying for your husband 3 times every day—before he wakes up, at noon, and right before he comes home from work.  It’s such a simple thing, but it made me realize that I truly do not pray for John enough.

What about you?  Do you pray for your spouse 3 times a day?  One time a day?  At all?

It’s really easy to do, but I’ll be the first to admit that I have not prayed consistently like that for my husband.  I’ve been making it a priority to stop now 3 times a day to pray for him.  I know there’s nothing “magical” about 3 times a day.  I just thought it was a really good challenge.  I like the times too—- before he goes to work, mid-day, and then as he comes home and transitions from work to family.  I can only imagine that it would make a difference in his life as I pray for him consistently every day at those times.

What difference would it make in your life if you began to consistently pray for your spouse every day at those times?  How would it affect your spouse? How do you think it would change you personally?  How would it impact your marriage?

I think it will grow us closer as a couple, but also help me to keep the focus off of myself and on my husband and his needs.  It will help me to keep our marriage first and what it needs above what I want or need.  I’m looking forward to seeing the difference after even just one month of praying for John 3 times a day.

Are you up to the challenge?
